Eco-labels and assessment systems
Environmental labels and assessments are important tools for ensuring that products meet high standards for environmental performance, health, and quality. They are based on independent evaluation and clear criteria, providing guidance for both professional users and consumers. Below, we describe the most common environmental labels and assessment systems we work with, what they represent, and how they are used.
Eco-labels and assessments in the paint offering
Nordic Swan
The Nordic Swan is the official eco-label of the Nordic countries for goods and services across a wide range of product categories. The label is based on a holistic assessment of a product’s environmental impact from a life cycle perspective—from raw materials and production to use and disposal. In addition to environmental requirements, there are also requirements for function and quality.
The Nordic Swan is a Type 1 eco-label, meaning that criteria are developed by an independent organization and products are reviewed and approved by a third party.
EU ECOLABEL
The EU Ecolabel, also known as the EU Flower, is the official eco-label of the European Union and corresponds to the Nordic Swan at the European level. Like the Nordic Swan, it is based on a life cycle perspective and a holistic approach where environment, health, and quality are considered together.
The EU Ecolabel is also a Type 1 label, meaning independent verification and clearly defined criteria that are continuously updated.

Eco-labels for construction products
BASTA and byggvarubedömningen
BASTA and Byggvarubedömningen are established systems for assessing the content of construction products from an environmental and health perspective. The purpose is to contribute to a non-toxic and sustainable construction and property sector by identifying and phasing out particularly hazardous substances.
These assessments are primarily used by property owners, developers, and contractors as a basis for material selection.
Emission classification
M1 classification
M1 is a voluntary Finnish emission classification for building materials and interior products. The classification focuses on low emissions and a good indoor environment and includes requirements for VOC levels, formaldehyde, ammonia, and odor.
M1 is often used as a quality indicator for products used in environments with high requirements for air quality and indoor comfort.

Other markings
CE marking
CE marking is a legal requirement for construction products covered by harmonized EU standards. The marking shows that the product meets essential requirements according to applicable regulations and that there is a declaration of performance describing the product’s characteristics.
