Stålplast Primer CA

2-component, epoxy-based, yellow primer intended to be used on metal surfaces that will later be coated with, for example, spray putty or topcoat.

Additional information

Product information
  • Product description
Two-component epoxy primer for industrial use with very good rust-protective properties.
  • Area of application
Steel-plastic Primer CA is intended to be used on clean sheet metal surfaces or aluminum that will then be coated with spray filler or topcoat. This is mainly done to stabilize the paint system. It is used in the manufacturing industry for priming bodies, beams, chassis, pipes, panels, or similar.
Technical information
  • Application temperature

    15-30°C

  • Base material

    High molecular weight epoxy/polyaminoamide adduct

  • Colour

    Yellow

  • Completely dry

Fully cured after about 7 days at +20°C

  • Density at 20ºC

    A-component: 1.43 kg/l, B-component: 0.84 kg/l, mixed: 1.14 kg/l. kg/L

  • Material consumption

    10-14 m²/l

  • Potlife

Mixed in a closed container for at least 3 days at +20°C.

  • Re-paintable

For an applied amount between 10-30 wet µm, the primer should be aired for an equal number of minutes. For an amount between 30-50 wet µm, the airing time should be doubled before the next work step may be performed.

  • Shelf life

    2 years

  • Thinner/Cleaning

    Cellulose thinning max 10%

Application
  • Mixing ratio

Component A and Component B are mixed in equal parts by volume (e.g., 1 liter of Component A is mixed with 1 liter of Component B and stirred thoroughly). If dilution is desired, this can be done with Cellulose Thinner. Especially if the finish coat (top coat) is to be applied directly on the primer or in so-called intermediate spraying, i.e., if you want to isolate spray filler and the like with a layer of Steel Plast Primer CA, it is very important that the primer is allowed to flow out properly. By diluting with Cellulose Thinner, this flow-out is achieved. If poor flow-out occurs, the paint can exhibit an orange peel texture, which negatively affects the gloss.

  • Pretreatment

All surfaces intended to be applied with Stålplast Primer CA should be free of grease, oil, and similar substances.

  • Application

CA primer is preferably applied with a spray gun, and usually three spray passes are required to achieve 50 dry microns needed for optimal rust protection (can be top-coated).
It can also be applied with a roller (nap roller) or brush, and in that case it is done in thin layers with diluted CA Primer. It can also be wiped on in a thin layer with a cloth, for example under filler (adhesion promoter).

  • After painting

Drying time: Steel-plastic Primer CA must be dry and matte before other work steps are performed. When coating with CA-primer plus spray filler on galvanized sheet metal, CA-primer must dry for at least 2 hours before applying the spray filler.

  • After treatment

    Sanding:
Steelplast Primer CA is preferably sanded wet (however, remove the water as soon as possible after sanding). When sanding dry, some "tackiness" in the primer is noticeable, which makes sanding more difficult.
Sanding is almost exclusively applicable to cured primer. Normally, Steelplast Primer CA does not need to be sanded before repainting with a topcoat. As a rule, it can be said that if the primer is left for more than 4-5 hours before over-spraying, it should be sanded. For rust protection painting of steel and aluminum constructions, where Steelplast Primer CA alone is meant to provide the rust protection, film thicknesses of 70-80 microns in two passes are sprayed for the best result.
